Jun. 10th, 2018 02:42 pmI'm not an all-or-nothing person in my general mindset, but when I get curious about something, it's hard to stop halfway. After saying I wanted to write more, I did! Then I realized that the Apple Magic Keyboard is not so magic for my RSI. Since I plan on doing a lot of writing in the next few months, I asked around about keyboards and did a bunch of reading.
Somehow in the time since I last used a mechanical keyboard, they've turned into an expensive trend. A colleague told me that the IBM Model M goes for several hundred on eBay now. I guess I shouldn't have donated my old one to Free Geek? I wanted to try a split layout, but $300+ seems a little much for my budget. Fortunately, I have friends who try these things and offer to loan me what they aren't using. So I tested out a Keyboardio, and it's cool but not a good fit. I have a Mathias Ergo Pro (also split layout) to try out this week from another lovely friend. I ordered two other things: Magicforce 68 that I'm currently typing on (affordable, clicky, small), and a WASD Code as recommended by Wirecutter (arriving tomorrow).
I went down a couple of rabbit holes: stylish keycaps, switches, and DIY kits. Maybe I can work this into one of the Recompiler issue themes next year and do a kit myself. I really like the look of the 60% and smaller layouts, but I suspect they aren't going to help my typing.
Ritalin is good, eating is hard. I skipped half my evening activities for the week and I'm drinking a lot of protein shakes. On Wednesday I'm headed to Detroit for Allied Media Conference where I hope to find it as energizing as when I attended in 2016. I have more confidence in this year's lodgings, too: the last time, we had an Airbnb with no curtains and a dishwasher that wasn't actually connected.
